Hailing from Rangeview High School in Aurora, Colorado, Abdinasir Hassan took his freshman
2025 track season by storm, cementing himself as one of the top rising stars both statewide and
nationally.
Fall 2024 XC:
Hassan had a steady start to his high school cross country career. His performances over the
5K distance were promising, highlighted by a 16:26 personal best at the Pat Amato Classic. He
finished 11th at the Colorado 5A Region 1 meet, but faced a tough day at the Colorado 5A State Championship,
finishing 103rd overall. Nevertheless, considering his freshman status, Hassan still had an incredible first year. The fall season served as his introduction to high school competition,
few could have predicted the explosive growth that would follow in the spring. (Pictured above, photo credit: Jen Jardeleza)
Spring Track 2025:
If the fall was Hassan planting himself in the soil, then the spring was his full bloom. Emerging
from winter in flying form, he went on to win five 3200m races, including a standout victory at the
HOKA St. Vrain Invitational with a time of 9:15.07, good enough to qualify for the 5A Track and Field State
Championship in the event. In the same meet, he clocked an impressive 4:18.97 in the 1600m,
also securing his spot at the state meet in that event.
At the Colorado 5A State Meet,
Hassan delivered when it counted: he placed 9th in the 3200m with a 9:21.28, making him the
3rd-fastest freshman in 5A, and 8th in the 1600m with a new personal best of 4:16.48,
establishing himself as the top freshman in the state for that event. He also landed himself on the podium in both events in one of the toughest classifications in Colorado. These breakout performances revealed his true potential and hinted at something special
brewing for the upcoming 2025 RunningLane Track Championships in Huntsville, Alabama.
#5 All-Time Freshman 3200m In US History:
Down in Huntsville, Alabama, the stage was set for the nation's top high school runners to battle
it out in both the 3200m and the mile at the 2025 RunningLane Track Championships. Coming
off his strong performances at the state meet, Hassan was ready to chase some big
personal bests. The 3200m came first, and the pace was hot from the gun. The race featured
four of Colorado's top freshmen, making the unofficial title of "fastest freshman" in the 3200m
very much up for grabs. Hassan stayed locked in, cranking lap after lap with precision and grit,
ultimately crossing the line in a blistering 8:56.36, good for #5 on the all-time U.S. list for
freshman boys, (pictured above, photo credit: Boujee Fox Photos). A remarkable feat by any standard. Later in the meet, Hassan returned for the
mile and delivered yet another personal best, clocking 4:14.14 (converting to 4:12.46 for
1600m). His performance solidified him as one of the brightest young distance talents in the
country.
The Training and Who He Is: Overall, the training that led to Hassan's breakout results was surprisingly mild - he was not
logging heavy mileage. He built himself up gradually from the fall cross country season,
averaging just 25 miles per week. What he loves most about the sport is simple; having fun and
spending time with his teammates. Before discovering running, Hassan played a lot of soccer
and basketball, but he did not feel like he could truly excel in those sports. Ultimately, he chose
cross country and it's safe to say, that decision was a game-changer.
What's Next?:
Up next for Hassan is a focused summer of training as he builds toward the fall 2025 cross
country season. He hopes to contribute to his team in every way he can while also chasing
some big individual goals. " I feel amazing. I feel fast," Abdi says. " The race where I hit that time
and placement proved to me that I can be something in the future of running." His dream? To
qualify for the Nike Cross Country Nationals. "I know I'm quick enough, I just need solid training,
good recovery, and sleep. I know I can place well and make a name for myself when nationals come around." Hassan has already proven his strength on the track, and we cannot wait to
see how far he will go this upcoming cross country season.
