There are three names on the list who have won the XC National Championship - Melody Fairchild of Boulder High School (1989, 1999), Adam Goucher of Doherty High School (1993), and Katelyn Kaltenbach of Smoky Hill High School (2003).
Probably the most prolific name on the list is Melody Fairchild. She holds the course record at Balboa Park, running 16:39 in 1990 to earn 1st place! Furthermore, the year before that, she won the title in 1989 in a time of 17:05. She is one of only a few who have ever won back-to-back individual national titles at this championship.
For Goucher, he qualified three years in a row and finished 13th, 15th, and ended his high school career with a 1st place finish in 1993. He ran a time of 14:41, which is still one of the fastest times for Balboa Park, etching his name into history.
Finally, Kaltenbach won the title in 2003, the first time someone from Colorado had won since Goucher in 1993. She earned the title running a time of 17:24 and improved upon her 7th place finish from a year ago.
