If the State Meet Were Held Today, Part II: 2A Boys & Girls

Relays got it done for Wray last spring. Relays are doing their part again this spring. Colorado Track XC file photo.

The gaps in the meet results are a little fewer at the 2A level, so the picture we see at this time for 2A is perhaps a little more telling than in some other classificiations. While there's still a good month left in the season, some trends are clearly developing.

2A Girls (Scroll down for 2A Boys)

The deeper we get into the season, the more it appears Akron is the team to beat. With relays that are ranked at or near the top across the board and potential to put up points in several more individual events, the Rams are in the driver's seat as of April 23. There may be some event choices to be made for Sydney Clarkson, but that still leaves a big gap on the field.

Johanna Reed and Jordyn Rienks will take Paonia a long way, and relay points are clearly going to help, but the Eagles need more to run down Akron.

Behind Akron and Paonia is a logjam of nearly-matched programs--Nederland, Limon, Holyoke, and Dolores. Nederland's strength in distance will put a lot of points on the board, but the Panthers will end up competing against themselves for most of those points. Holyoke, also, is a little limited in where their points seem to be coming from. On that basis, Limon and Dolores may have the advantage as team entries heading into the state meet.

2A Boys

Wray's 2A state championship trophy is apparently getting lonely sitting in the trophy case. The boys are doing everything possible to bring it a little companionship. Wray's strengths aren't spead across the board, but what they have in the sprint and jumping events is such that their margin on the rest of the field is a considerable one. And, just as Akron dominates the 2A girls relays, so Wray dominates the 2A boys relays. For now, the Eagles are soaring.

Burlington and Baca County, two of just a handful of programs lying as far to the east of the state as Wray, make up a big chunk of the competition. Baca County's rankings points should rise a little as Laken Alley and Landry Cogburn have missed finals in some recent track meets (I'm guessing that has something to do with conflicts with other sports, but I'm not sure). Burlington is simply a solid program with a strong tradition. It wasn't that long ago that the Cougars were the scourge of the plains in the world of track and field.

Cripple Creek-Victor and Paonia both have the potential to score a lot of points as well. Shawn Dubbs of CC-V may end up with more points than any other individual in the 2A state meet.
