Last season McClave High School finished 6th overall at the Class 1A state meet, but the scores were quite close with 3rd through 8th place within 7 points of each other. Going into this season, McClave returns many of their scoring athletes from the state meet and with each athlete getting better and stronger, this team could have a chance at sneaking onto the podium!
One of the key performers from last year was Tuff Kelly, who earned some big points in both hurdle events. Kelly won the 110m hurdles and placed 5th overall in the 300m hurdles. Both of his personal bests came from the state meet, where he ran 15.40 and 42.94 in both hurdle events, and he is currently ranked #4 in the 110m hurdles and #4 in the 300m hurdles! Kelly has not raced much this season, so he definitely has plenty of time to continue to improve on his season best times and hit somer personal bests as well. On the distance side, both Myles Northrup and Hudson Goble have the possibility to score some huge points for the team and improve on the amount of points they scored last year. Starting with Northrup, he placed in all three distance events, placing 5th in both the 800m and the 1600m, and finishing 3rd in the 3200m. So far this season, Northrup has run two big PRs in the 1600m and the 3200m, running 4:47 and 10:35! He also has a personal best of 2:05 in the 800m and though he has yet to race the 800m this season, there is a good chance he will run a personal best in that event as well. He is ranked #3 in the 1600m and the 3200m and is one of the names to look out for to place well in all three distance events once again.
For Goble, he competed at the state meet last year as well, finishing 7th overall in the 3200m and 11th in the 1600m. Going into this season, he has already ran three personal best times running 2:06 in the 800m, 4:57 in the 1600m, and 10:59 in the 3200m! Since Goble has already improved so much this season, he could be one of the difference makers for this team to score even more points than what he did last season. He is ranked #3 in the 800m and #6 in the 1600m and the 3200m. With Northrup and Goble working together these two could make a difference for this squad at the state meet!
Moving on to some of the field events, both Felipe Mungaray and Kielan Mallard have experience at the state meet and both scored last season. Mungaray placed 8th overall in the discus and shot put and Mallard placed 9th overall in the discus and 5th in shot put. Both are sitting very strong in the shot put rankings with Mallard at #3 and Mungaray at #4! In discus, Mungaray is also #2 overall in the rankings! At the first meet of the season, Mungaray hit a big PR in the discus, throwing 148-3! If he continues to throw like that, he will also help out his team immensely. Mungaray has also thrown 44-5 in shot put and Mallard has thrown 44-8.25, which was a new personal best for Mallard. Just like Northrup and Goble working together in the distance events, Mungaray and Mallard could work together to score some huge points in both throwing events.
Finally, McClave's shot at jumping up in the standings may come from their relays, where many of their relays were ranked well going into the state meet but unfortunately their 4x200m relay and their 4x800m relay team were disqualified at the state meet last season. With pretty much everyone returning from last year, these teams should all be able to score points and could be the difference makers for the team if they can put it together.
Starting with the 4x100m relay, the team finished 4th overall at the state meet and they are currently ranked #2 in the Class 1A rankings with a season best time of 46.85. In the 4x200m relay, they were ranked 10th going into the state meet last year, but they have already run faster this season with their same lineup. They have hit a time of 1:37 and are ranked #1! For their 4x400m relay and the 4x800m relay, they are already ranked incredibly well and have ran very strong times, hitting 3:38 and 8:49! Their 4x400m relay is ranked #1 and their 4x800m relay is ranked #2. As long as the relay squads can put together a clean showing, then they will be a big part of the team getting on the podium.
Overall, McClave High School has a strong returning contingent with almost all athletes competing at the state meet and finishing on the podium in the past seasons. With everyone returning better and stronger, McClave has a very strong chance to improve on how they finished last season and could end with a podium finish.
