Reedy Ready To Compete For Colorado

Buchanan High School senior Hagen Reedy has ended her college recruitment and will head back to the state of Colorado to run for the Buffaloes.. Reedy moved from Littleton to California six years ago. In 2011, she won the CIF California State Cross Country Championships and finished runner-up in 2012. In her senior year, she placed 20th at Nike Cross Nationals in Portland Oregon, capping off a stellar cross country career.

What has the recruiting process been like for you?

The recruiting process has been fairly smooth for me. When first starting the process, I had not reached the times I had by the end of the season, so as the season progressed, I had other doors to venture through. Once I decided that I wanted to take advantage of all of my options, I left the state of California and looked into surrounding states. I made a very early decision so the recruiting process has not been very long or grueling for me.

What schools did you take visits to?

I took only two trips: Long Beach State and the University of Colorado. On the flight home from Colorado I had already made my decision. I was scheduled to take visits to the University of Arizona and the University of Arkansas, both of which I cancelled after I took my trip to CU. I did a lot of thinking, but knew I didn't need to take another trip. I committed a week before the California State meet.

How much of a relief was it to get it out of the way so you could focus on your senior season?

Even though I wanted to make an early decision, I was not expecting to! As I stated above, my recruiting process did not take off until mid-season. After I had made contact with CU, however, the process went incredibly fast. I wanted my trips to be over before championship season to avoid fatigue and sickness, so I took a trip to Long Beach quickly followed by CU. It is nice to have it behind me so now I can concentrate on school and track.

Why did you ultimately choose Colorado?

I chose Colorado because it hit all of the points on my checklist. CU has an incredibly welcoming team. One of the things that I wanted in my school was a team that I fit in with and felt supported by. On my visit, the team and the coaches were extremely welcoming and that was a great sign. Six years ago I moved from Littleton, Colorado, so it is like going home a little bit. CU Boulder has been my "dream" school since I started my search and I was extremely happy when I heard back that it was mutual. Overall, CU is a team that is very competitive (with other teams and within the team itself). It is absolutely beautiful and I love the culture of the city. I have total trust and belief in the coaching staff that they will help me reach my goals and it is a great school for many majors (seeing as I am undeclared).

Coach Wetmore has worked some very elite runners in his time at Colorado. How important was it to have a great relationship with the coaches?

The relationship that I have with my coaches is very important to me, especially in my college years. Coach Wetmore, Coach Burroughs, and Coach Nelson are all extremely respected. Coach Wetmore has an outstanding coaching history and that is very comforting to me. I know that I can trust my future in his coaching because he is focused on every athlete's health and performance on the team. After talking with the coaches, I just knew that the training program fit me like a glove and that I would excel under it.

What are you looking forward to most about running with the Buffaloes?

I am looking forward to being part of such a committed and hardworking team. Boulder is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in the country. I am extremely excited to grow as a person, athlete, and student in such an active environment with such fun people and diverse culture.

It's your senior year what are your goals for this year and beyond?

This year, I want to stay healthy. As long as I stay healthy and happy, I know that I will be able to accomplish the time goals and seasonal goals I have set for myself. I am excited to battle Sarah at state in the 3200 and I may possibly race post-state. I have specific personal bests that I want to beat as well. After this year, I want to be a contributing member the team’s success. I will definitely focus on the 5k and 10k in track and see how far I can get. It should be a fun year!
