5A Region 1 will be one of three regional contests being settled on Friday in Thornton at the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center. It's a course that mixes hard and soft surfaces, sits mostly level, and tends to run fast.
Here's a look at the specifics of the 5A Region 1 portion of that multi-regional meet, starting with the boys:

Arvada West brings in the #1 ranking in the virtual meet, but Arapahoe brings in the hot hand. Where Arvada West has seemingly hit a plateau, Arapahoe has been on a stead upward trajectory. That could make for a much, much more interesting contest than the virtual meet is indicating. Of course, it's also true that we may not see a pitched battle simply on account of the fact that this is regional qualifying and all you really need out of this meet is a top-four finish.
Dakota Ridge is another team showing steadily better as the season wears on. Dakota Ridge figures to advance to state relatively easily as well.
Things get hairy at the #4 position.
Will it be Eaglecrest? Or Legend? Or Chatfield? Or Smoky Hill? These four teams need to be sold out to Friday's outcome. In all likelihood only one will advance to state, though if a team above them gets careless, it's not unthinkable that two make it. I really have no taste for predicting which one of the four advances--I can see it going any of four different ways. These teams really are closely matched.
Of course, all that has massive implications for individual qualifiers. Your most likely individual qualifier, of course, is Harrison Scudamore of Denver East. Following him as strong possibilities are Jerod Kuhn and Jemil Kassahun. Its a peculiar feature of this region that several of the times you see below come from the season-opening D'Evelyn meet and have not been matched since. That makes projecting individual qualifiers all the more dicey.
So, moral to the story, show up and find out for yourself what happens!
