Tomah Whitney brings back proven leadership on the course for Evergreen this fall.
As many high-tier athletes as Evergreen has graduated in recent years, you'd think Evergreen might be headed for a dip in their fortunes.
No so, however. As the school name suggests, the prospects for this team are evergreen.
Although she appears to have missed most of the track season (possibly with an injury, though I do not know), this fall's front runner figures to be senior Tomah Whitney. And, she's earned the right.
Whitney ran 19:22 at Nike Cross Regionals last fall and boasts an 18:56 5K cross country PR. That's a solid start to anyone's roster.
Falling in behind Whitney are sub-20s Bri Teegarden and Kristina Schreiber. Both were busy this past track season, Teegarden with distance events, and Schreiber with 200s and 400s. It's worth noting that Schreiber ran 57.19 for the 400 this spring.
Rachel Harris, Carlee Trindl, and Jaden Phillips are three more returning runners from last year's team, each with sub-21 credentials (and well below sub-21 at that) from last fall's campaign.
Better still, all three were busy with track this spring. Joining them was Samantha Gibson, whose track times from this spring indicate she's ready to run a lot faster than her 21:21 PR last fall.
If you subscribe to the idea that good 300 hurdlers make great cross country runners, you'll like Rachel Harris right away.
In summary, then, Evergreen is a deep and experienced team coming into this fall. Reason abounds to be optimistic about the fall season.
And, we haven't even begun to talk about the freshman class. The main reason we haven't had that discussion is that it's really not terribly clear yet who all is coming in with the class, much less what they've done in the past.
Roster spots will be difficult, though not impossible to earn with this team. Any freshmen who can secure that honor will only make an already-tough team even tougher. Evergreen has had some excellent teams in the past. This one, however, holds considerable potential to be among their very best.
