Lizzie Valentine and Centauri figure to be stirring the 2A Girls pot a little next fall.

2017 In Review

The summer started out with Telluride as almost everyone's favorite to win it all. But that didn't quite come together. Keith Hampton stepped aside from the coaching reins. Maya Ordonez took a year to study elsewhere, and... Well, Nederland happened.

The Panthers rode a brilliant 1-3 finish (1-2 in the team scoring) from Helen Cross and Sarah Davidson to a state title. That further crowded a case already a little tight with 2A Girls state cross country trophies. Paonia and Lyons put up nice fights, but Nederland collected the lowest point total.

Looking Ahead To 2018

Nederland, as the defending state champions, certainly gets a look, but so do some other schools as well. A good place to begin, but not a good place to end, is with a glance at the virtual meet analyses of returning runners for 2018

Perhaps the biggest issue we stare down as we contemplate next year concerns whether 2A will be scoring three or four runners next fall. It's a lot different game if they end up scoring four. But the answer to that question hasn't been finalized.

On the pages that follow, we'll take a closer look at each of the teams that have the look--to my eye, at least--of serious contenders for 2018. Others may join them next fall, but these are the teams that are already showing signs of that kind of life.
