Earlier in the week head Central Coach, Ted Leblow, was very excited to introduce a ‘real’ cross country course in Grand Junction. His one worry: rain was expected Friday evening and Saturday morning. If it rained too much, warned Leblow, “it may be a very muddy affair”. The weather gods were not smiling favorably, and rain it did, and in copious amounts for this desert clime.

The area occupied by Matchett Park is primarily made of Billings clay and Billings silt loam. Growing up in the Midwest, I was used to sinking into the mud and having it suck my shoes off if they were not tied on tight enough.
