Sydnee Larkin Roars Out of the Gate
It didn't take Sydnee Larkin long to start serving notice.
Larkin's evening began in a fairly nondescript way with a 17-0.75 in the long jump. She's gone a lot farther from the board than that, but she was just getting warmed up.
An hour or so later, she was back at the pit, ripping a winning triple jump of 40-0.75. Evidently, Larkin has been attending to her game, because that's nearly two feet better than she tripled jumped all last indoor season, and four inches better that her winning jump from State in May.
With the adrenaline from her triple jump PR still coursing through her veins, Larkin found a spot on the 60 meter dash start line and got to the finish in a blazing 7.79. It was the best time for Larkin in three years and gets her to #9 in the nation for the event for the season at the time of this writing.
Cherokee Trail teammate Taylor Watson took the event title with a 7.61, which has her sliding in at #2 in the national rankings. Dawnielle Lewis checks in at #3 with a 7.70.
In the hurdles, Emily Sloan left her college competition strewn about the track like so many unfortunate armadillos on a rural Texas highway. Sloan's winning time of 8.61 also has her atop the national high school rankings for the moment.
So, one low-key meet in the books and Colorado's girls already have three national top-ten marks in the 60 meter dash, a #1 mark in the 60 hurdles, and the #2 mark in the triple jump. And so it begins...
A couple more nice performances on the girls side included Anna Hall with the top high school time (and current US #9 mark) of 40.65, plus Emily Gallegos-Francksen's winning 1000 meter effort of 3:28.18, a full 15 seconds ahead of second place.
