This Week in Track and Field

It's time now for Steinhauer Field House to join the rotation of high school meets.

On the docket for this week are two meets.

Thursday sees the debut of the Colorado School of Mines Thursday series. This is a heretofore untried idea, so it remains to be seen how this one flies. Registration is still open until sometime approaching meet time on Thursday. Actual meet action starts at 7 PM.

Clubs that have already made entries include FK Elite, Valor Track Academy, Vista Nation, Rough Rider, Colorado Jets, Golden Running Academy, and Elevate Athletics. Throw in a bundle of individual entries and you already have the makings of a pretty solid meet.

Then, on Sunday, USATF-Colorado is back at the USAFA Cadet Field House for the Tony Wells Memorial. Offhand, I'm going to guess that the Tony Wells Memorial ends up being a bit smaller than last weekend's MLK Mile High. First, it faces competition from the Mines meet and, second, if you're going to take off a weekend from one of the USATF-Colorado series, this is--at least in one sense--the most logical one to take off as it falls in the middle of three consecutive Sunday meets at the Air Force Academy (and four consecutive weekends at the Air Force Academy).

That said, USATF-Colorado always get a decent draw no matter how they arrange their schedule and venues. Make no mistake about it, there will be athletes there competing on Sunday.

A few athletes will do both meets. For some folks, there's no such thing as too much track and field.

If, however, you were looking to run something longer than a mile this weekend, you need to find some place other than these two meets to do it. The longest race at Mines on Thursday will be a mile. The longest race at the Tony Wells, befitting a meet named for a legendary sprint coach, is 1500 meters.

If you want to triple jump this weekend, the Tony Wells meet is the only game in town.

Also of note, Sunday's Tony Wells meet order gets the 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash done with right away at the top to the order. High school action starts at 12:30 PM at the Cadet Field House.

If you missed seeing much in the way of pole vault last weekend due to the big event in Reno, the pole vaulters should be back in force this weekend at both Mines and the Cadet Field House.

There is not a lot in the way of out-of-state distractions to be found this weekend, but the Duke City All Comers meet is going on Saturday in Albuquerque. Durango sent a substantial delegation to Albuquerque last weekend, but don't (yet) have anyone signed up for this weekend. On the other hand, there is a sprinkling of Cortez and Bayfield based athletes entered.

There has been a whole lot of quiet out of the San Luis Valley high school group so far this winter. I'm not yet sure what to make of that.

Colorado Track XC will be on-hand for coverage Thursday at Colorado School of Mines. A final decision has not yet been made on coverage at the Tony Wells Memorial on Sunday, but if one or more of us are there, it will not be for the entire session.
