Track and Field Notes, May 25

The latest news that doesn't neatly fit into any other articles...

For those who keep track of this sort of thing, Florida will be adding the javelin as a state-sanctioned high school event next spring. Slowly, but surely, the event is gaining more widespread acceptance.

I will start publishing Colorado Track XC all-state teams for each classification and gender starting later today. Those should go up one per day until complete. 20 athletes per classification and gender will be honored with Colorado Track XC all-state recognition.

Another upcoming article series that should see some heavy traffic over the next several days is a very early look at what this year's rankings of returning athletes tell us about next year's likely top teams in Colorado high school track and field. That series, too, will go by classification and gender, one per day, until the series gets done.

Colorado Track XC will be on-site with coverage this summer at Great Southwest and Brooks PR. I also plan to do all possible Colorado coverage, from a distance, for New Balance Nationals Outdoor and the Nike Festival of Miles.

Other events of smaller scope on the coverage agenda for the summer include the CHSCA All-State Cross Country Race on June 10, at least one day of the USATF-Colorado Junior Olympic Outdoor Championships, and the June 7 Valor Twilight meet.

That Valor Twilight meet on June 7 might be a meet you'd be interested in taking a longer look at if you're headed to Brooks PR or NBNO and wanting a meet opportunity in between to help you stay sharp. The cost is a mere $5 per event and doesn't require a USATF membership. Events on June 7 include 100, 200, 800, 1500, 100/110 hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, and discus.

All events take place at the Valor track in Highlands Ranch. A big shout out to Valor Track Academy for putting this (and two more meets in the series the next two Wednesday nights) on. More information here.

Later-in-the-summer events that I'll also be taking a look at doing coverage for include the Rocky Mountain State Games, the Colorado Classic Mile, and the Run for Rwanda. In each case, one big determining factor for coverage will be the number of Colorado high school athletes involved.

The same could be said for the National High School Trail Running Championships in Salida in July. There is a potential conflict there, though, with the CHSCA Multi-Sport Clinic. I'm pretty sure I haven't yet mastered being in two places at the same time.

Although I will not be doing Bolder Boulder coverage, I definitely plan to add the times recorded to athlete profile pages for top high school finishers in each age group. As always, I will be gleaning results from the Boulder Road Runners summer track meet series for posting to athlete profile pages as well.

Additionally, I'll be scouring the state for 4th of July road race results to post to athlete pages.

As you might have expected, plans are already in the works for fall cross country meet coverage. Colorado Track XC goes wherever TCA goes, so that will include the UCCS Rust Buster, the St. Vrain Invitational, the Eagle Valley Invitational, the Pueblo Central Invitational, the Polson Ranch Invitational, the Fountain-Ft. Carson Invitational, the CSML League Meet, 3A Region 2, and State. In the post-season, it will include the Tomahawk 2 Mile and NXR-SW. Already penciled in for coverage in addition to those meets are the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede and middle school state. More will be added later.

Enjoy your summer, but, as the saying goes, don't be a stranger around these parts.
