Evans Impresses And The Classical Academy Nearly Sweep 3A


The Classical Academy took the 4x1 state title over Lutheran in the final strides.

Maya Evans made the most of her final state meet. She dominated the sprints, winning the 100 in 12.02, and the 200 in 24.88. There wasn't a shadow in sight of the Lutheran senior. By the time the weekend had ended, she had three state titles. 

On the other side of the spectrum, the 400 came down to the wire, as Aryelle Wright and Regan Aurich took the race to a photo finish. After a review, Wright was deemed the winner in 57.90 to Aurich's 57.91.

In the 800 and the 1,600 a new face on top of the podium was Maggi Congdon. The Steamboat sophomore nabbed two state titles over the weekend, winning the in 2:14.07, and the 1,600 in 5:06.52. Congdon utilized her speed in both races, sprinting to victory. Peak to Peak took the 2-4 spots in the 1,600 with Tiana Bradfield, Anna Shults, and Quinn McConnell going 2-3-4.

In the 3,200 the race was all Hannah EllisThe Frontier Academy senior ran away with the win in 11:19 - a 15-second victory.

In the 100 hurdles pre-meet favorite Esther Diza-Mbelolo did not disappoint. The D'Evelyn junior went 15.08 in the finals for the win. She was denied the hurdle sweep, however, as Ashten Loeks took the 300 hurdles in 45.40, just ahead of Diza-Mbelolo's 45.46.

In the high jump Jordan Lanning jumped over the competition, winning the event in 5-7.75. The win was four-inches over of her nearest competitor.

Likewise, Maya Evans dominated the long jump by well over a foot. The senior claimed the event in 18-3.5.

The triple jump was a much closer competition, with Alexandria Burns and Noelle Meagher going the distance. Burns took the W in 36-5 to Meagher's 35-11.25.

The pole vault was another close competition, with Erika Willis claiming the upset victory. Willis and Hayley Rayburn tallied the best pole vault competition among the girls in all-classifications. Rayburn was the favorite coming into the met, though Willis saved her best for last, winning the state title in 12-9 to Rayburn's 12-6.

In the throws Keena Murphy capped her high school career with a 127-10 win in the discus, while Amaya Atencio took the shot put in 39-1.

In the relays it was a battle between the team favorites Lutheran and The Classical Academy.

TAC took the 4x1 in 50.15, just ahead of Lutheran's 50.27. TAC had a three-second victory in the 4x2, however, winning the event in 1:43.91 to Lutheran's 1:46. Lutheran got their win in the Sprint Medley, claiming the event in 1:49.63, just ahead of Grand Valley's 1:49.69. In the 4x4 Alamosa was the surprise victor, claiming the event in 3:58. TAC was just behind in 4:02. There wasn't anyone who could keep pace with Peak to Peak in the 4x8, as they ran away with a nine-second victory in 9:20.

In the team competition The Classical Academy defended their state title with 110 points. Behind them Lutheran took second with 86 points, and Alamosa was third with 57.
