I suspect there are a lot of people out there who wonder what running for Jonathan Dalby is like. Can you give us any insights?
Running for Dalby… Oh man, the sheer torture we Vista athletes go through daily is incomprehensible— let me tell you! No, I’m just joking.
It can’t be said enough how phenomenal of a coach that Dalby truly is. He’s helped develop me as a runner so much and he really helps create a running plan that is unique to your needs, abilities, and goals! He’ll be the first to tell you though that what makes the program so great is from the help of coach Selle, coach Cooke, coach Wolley, and coach Cox. The whole coaching staff is just so great and they care so much for the team and want to help everyone reach their full potential as an athlete. You truly feel like you’re apart of something bigger than yourself here at Vista, and I guess that’s why we’ve had some success.
There are so many good runners at Mountain Vista. Do workouts sometimes get a little competitive?
When I first came to Vista I thought that workouts were going to be way competitive, and they can be, but for the most part everyone tries to help each other through the tough workouts. When you have so much talent on a team it’s nice to have people take turns leading an interval or helping to pull you through a tough set. But definitely, when you’re surrounded by competitive people by nature, the atmosphere on workout days can be pretty tense, especially during the first part of the season.
If you had to pick a favorite high school memory to date, what would that be?
My favorite high school memory is without a doubt when we won State in cross country this year. Winning state in 2012 was really special because it was our first, but for some reason winning it this year was a lot more memorable. I think part of it was because it was my last one, and it was just the perfect way to go out.
What's the one thing you'd most like to accomplish in what's remaining of your high school career?
I want to be up there for the 3200 at state, we have some really good runners in Colorado this year, but I think the 3200 state final will be something really fun to watch.
What were the big factors in making the BYU decision? Do you have any relatives who have run there?
I think the biggest factors for me in choosing BYU is that it’s a place where I can be my best self in all areas of my life, not just athletically, but academically, socially, and religiously. I do have an uncle who ran the 800 for BYU back in the day, and my Dad went there as well, but he didn’t run. Danny Carney is also a really good friend of mine and his perspective on the team definitely had an influence in my decision.
What's your intended course of study at BYU?
I’m still not 100% sure what I want to study, but as of right now Exercise Physiology as a major sounds really appealing.

So, if you happen to be at the same meet as Mountain Vista (and you know how difficult it is to miss Vista Nation when they're around), be sure to check out the boys 3200. Figure that Weaver's 9:43 PR isn't long for this world.
