Aiming for El Paso (the city, not the county)

Although Sydnee Larkin has demonstrated a proficiency in several events, she is slated to be focused on the long jump this weekend. Colorado Track XC file photo by Alan Versaw.

Reports of the demise of the high school season have been greatly exaggerated.

There is still plenty of high school track and field left, if you're willing to travel to get there. And, evidently, a nice-sized Colorado delegation is willing to travel. Destination: El Paso, Texas.

Entries have closed for the USATF Region X Junior Olympic meet that runs Thursday through Sunday. And since registration has closed, we have a very good idea of what Colorado athletes are registered, though not always a precise listing of who will actually compete.

Among the high school names you'll recognize on the entry list are Maya Evans, Marcus Howard, Kent Harris, Claudia Valenzuela, Juliyah Wilson, Haley Rogers, Sydnee Larkin, Julia Hall, Sunday Abarca (who, undoubtedly, hopes to be running on Sunday), Hayelom Fitsum, Javan Lanier, Amelia Harvey, Sarah Storey, Sierra Suazo, Chasidy Horton, Abigail Gray, Izze Calabrese, Josie Spitz, and several more.

At least for some, at stake is a trip to Jacksonville for JO Nationals later in the month. For others, this will simply be the last meet of the season.

And, there are questions to be answered. Can Maya Evans extend her long jump beyond the wind-legal 20-4.25 she has already attained this season? Will Javan Lanier come back with a long jump with a (legal) wind reading attached?

Colorado will, of course, also be represented in the younger age brackets as well, including by a couple of young athletes who were at the USATF Hershey Youth Outdoor Championships in Illinois last week.

As always, results will be posted here as quickly as I can make them available to you. Please keep checking back in.
