Charlie Perry and Rock Canyon Fight Fiercely for Titles

As far as recent cross country history goes, it is not surprising to see a runner from Monarch winning races. What may count as a surprise here, though, is a runner from Monarch not named Green winning races. But, today junior Charlie Perry showed that Monarch has more weapons up front than just Isaac Green.

After two JV races, the varsity boys started off the main event of the afternoon. After one mile a front pack of six runners had established some separation, lead by Trevor Smith of Standley Lake and Jerald Taylor of Custer County. The group set out with a blistering 4:55 first mile.

The pace proved too fast for most of the front pack and, by the two mile mark, it was Perry leading Taylor. The two were joined by Rock Canyon's Chris Theodore.

Perry, who was concerned about his kicking speed managed to create five meter gap on Taylor. "I knew I didn't exactly have the speed to take some of these guys. I knew I had to gap them a little earlier. Once we came down the hill I was hurting but I'm like 'I got to gap them now or I'm not going to gap them at all.' So I went for it."

The pair finished in 15:39 and 15:41, respectively.

Theodore and teammate Bailey Timmons went 3-4 to set the stage for a Rock Canyon victory over Monarch, 61 to 76.

Conspicuously absent from the racing were Isaac Green and Kyle Moran. Green later reported that he was out with a bug that had been moving around the Monarch boys team, but the defending state champion was beaming with pride over his teammate's victory.
