Faith Marches On

Under the tutelage of Steve Urban, the Faith boys team has taken a gigantic leap this season into the echelon of the best in the state. The Faith boys continued their march by winning the regional championship Friday afternoon. Cole Sprout looked pretty casual cruising to the regional title. Macklin Brockmeyer finished a surprising third en route to Faith scoring 60 points and a shiny new plaque.

Jefferson Academy was not too far behind with 71 points. Ryan Lehmuth and Christian Van Cleave went 2nd and 4th. Senior Paul Watters continued his tradition of setting a PR at regionals running 18:36 to 18th place. Freshman Michael Leoni and Senior Nathan Moore finished off the team scoring for the Jags to send them home with their fifth second place regional plaque in 8 years.

One of the biggest stories of the day might be the surge of the Peak to Peak boys. Running in a pack, the mostly sophomore crew from Peak to Peak went from being placed in the mid 30s at mile 1 to no worse than 23rd for scoring runners at the finish line. Kim McConnell's crew ran a perfect tactical race in the wind to finish third.

It is worth noting that in the first draft of the race results, Holy Family having run one of their strongest races of the season, was declared the regional champion. That was before a slight but important rule infraction had occurred. One of Holy Family's runners fell down about 30 yards from the finish line and was aided across the line by one of his teammates. They were both disqualified from the final results. This meant that Holy Family went from first to fourth. Kudos to Holy Family coaching staff and athletes for handling a tough moment with class and grace.
