2017 Ftn-Ft. Carson Invite: Chilling Out

Maya Evans Puts Up A Little Domination

There really aren't many ways to keep Maya Evans in check. You just hope you can make up the lost points in other events.

That was more or less the story today, too.

Evans eased into the top qualifying position in the 100 with a 12.07 (+1.1). Everyone knows that's not Evans' best time, but why would she need to drop her best time in prelims? And, honestly, the 1.1 wind was an aberration there, too. Based on the prevailing wind conditions, Evans had every reason to believe her prelim time would be erased by the wind. So, all she needed to do was cross the finish line legally and advance.

Next was the long jump. Evans went 19-5 for the win. That's a new season-best mark, but not even close to a PR. PRs will likely come when things get a little warmer.

Evans finished her day with the top time in the 200 prelims as well. This time, Evans posted a 25.57 (+5.4). There wasn't so much as a prayer of that one turning up wind legal. And, a 5.4 wind is a big enough wind that it's problematic whether it's even really all that helpful or not. A wind of that velocity has a way of taking you out of your rhythm, and the results are not always pretty when that happens.

In any case, in three events Evans did exactly what she needed to do on the day. Temperatures should be higher tomorrow and wind speeds much diminished. We might see those big times tomorrow.
