2017 Broomfield Invitational: Rivals Divide The Spoils

Varsity Girls Race

As expected, Broomfield rested their varsity squad coming off an intense battle with Mountain Vista at Liberty Bell one week ago.  Thus, it was left up to two other fierce local rivals, Boulder and Fairview, to stake claim to the front spots of the girl's race.

Without wasting much time, Fairview's Isabella Bowland and Boulder's Claudia Burgess established themselves as top two in the field. The pair ran side-by-side over the varied terrain that includes grass, dirt path, and even artificial turf.

Both seemed fairly content with the other's company until just past the two-mile mark on the west soccer field when Bowland began to edge away.  It was ever so gradual, and ever so steady, yet by the finish she had put 19 seconds of space between herself and Burgess, stopping the clock at 18:50.  It was Bowland's first ever victory in cross country in what is shaping up to be an outstanding season for Fairview senior.

Following Burgess across the line was Michelle Renner from Dakota Ridge.  She was the only runner not representing Boulder or Fairview in the top 6.  Fairview, despite the absence of Marlena Preigh, easily captured the team title 33-67 over Boulder.  The Renner-led Eagles, quietly putting together a nice season, were a close 3rd with 70 points.

Alana McClements snared fourth place for the Boulder Panthers.

Aiding in Fairview's victory were Kinsey Hall, Tegan Bartholomew Brown, and Lauren McKenna -- all with top ten finishes of their own.  The Knights could be positioning themselves for a potential top-five spot at State, especially with a full-strength Preigh on that day.
