It's safe to say that Niwot was intending to send a message on this day, because while the girl's squad achieved perfection with scoring 15 points, the boy's team put their entire top seven into the top nine overall.
Leading the way was Cruz Culpepper, who torched the field in his second race of the season. Culpepper soloed for much of the second half of the race to defend his region title with a 16:12 performance.
Behind Culpepper, James Overberg battled to hold off Charlie Welch.
With a half mile to go Welch was tracking Overberg, gradually inching forward, but the final 300 meters was all the Centaurus junior.
Overberg dug deep and was able to hold off the George Washington junior to finish second in 16:39, just ahead of Welch's 16:46.
And then the Niwot tsunami came roaring in.
Jack Kenkel led Joey Hendershot, Zane Bergen, Joaquin Herrera, Grayden Rauba, and Michael Carpenter in, as all six runners finished between 17:00 and 17:06.
When the dust settled Niwot tallied 23 points to claim the team title. Centaurus took the runner-up spot with 53 points, and George Washington took third with a 112. Northfield took the final state qualifying spot, tallying 126 points, while Standley Lake was just 11 points back with 137.
