The big news in the Land of Enchantment was that this was the weekend of the Albuquerque Metro Championships. What you get here is a collection of all the large schools from Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. And that's a big chunk of the power programs in New Mexico.
Albuquerque Academy came out solidly ahead of Rio Rancho and Eldorado on the girls side. The way things look right now in New Mexico, it's plausible these are the top three girls teams in the state. We'll know more after the Rio Rancho Jamboree this weekend, but these are certainly among your best teams in the state, if not the actual top three. Sue Cleveland was just a little back and stays in the hunt.
Cleveland took a fairly convincing win on the boys side, with Albuquerque Academy finishing second and Volcano Vista third. And, again, this might be the top three list of teams in the state right now. As with the girls, we'll have a better view after this weekend's Rio Rancho Jamboree.
It wasn't a big meet, but it did gather the Las Cruces high schools together. Centennial edged Onate for both the boys and girls titles. Right now, it's iffy if we'll see a regional championship race team out of the Las Cruces area, but Centennial appears to be the front runner.
