As the weeks of summer go, this one was a busy one for the running sports.
We've already posted coverage of the World Youth Trials, so we'll pass over that meet for the purposes of this article.
Depending on how you look at it, the week's action got underway first in Edwardsville, Illinois at the USATF Youth Outdoor National meet (not to be confused with the USATF Junior Olympic National meet to be contested next month in North Carolina) or at the Roosevelt All-Comer Summer Series #2 in Johnstown. We'll start closer to home here.
The highlight of the Roosevelt All-Comer series may have been a slighly rusty Andrew Bradberry taking out his own coach (that would be Matt Norton) in the 400, 56.65 to 56.97. I have my doubts the meet used FAT timing, but Coach Norton is probably happier with the 56.97 than the requisite upward rounding to 57.0 for hand timing. Bradberry, by the way, made a clean sweep of the 100, 200, and 400.
Highland's Jamie Clawson got the other triple crown out of this meet, winning the 100, triple jump, and high jump.
Coach Norton left budding phenom daughter Gwen at home for this meet. If you're a Facebook friend of Coach Norton you can see a photo of him helping Gwen learn how to start out of blocks at the first Roosevelt All-Comer meet. It's a cool photo made all the cooler by the fact that Gwen is wearing shorts that are most definitely a Mountain View shade of purple. Perhaps there will be an appearance of the next great thing in girls high school track and field at another of these Roosevelt meets later in the summer.

The USATF Youth Outdoor Track and Field Nationals meet has been going on all week, with events finally coming to a conclusion today.
Colorado participation was very limited for this meet, but not completely absent.
Haley Showalter, who took second in the World Youth Trials hammer throw earlier in the week, hung around and gave a throws clinic at the the USATF Youth Outdoors meet. Showalter won the discus at 149-3, won the hammer at 159-10, and finished sixth in the shot put at 35-7.25.
Speaking of throwers, Showalter wasn't the only Colorado native having fun. If you have designs on chasing a 4A boys throwing title next spring, you may want to take note that Jackson Spalding finished fourth in the shot put at 53-5.5 and added a lot of beef to his discus PR with a throw of 177-2, good enough for second.
If you dug through the throws results in the youth division, you would have noted a familiar surname of Weirich. But, she probably won't be throwing for Eads any time soon as she lives across the state line in Kansas.
Another familiar name in the results from this meet was Nicole Montgomery. Like Showalter, Montgomery hung around after the World Youth Trials and made a week of it. Hanging around paid off with a win in the 400 at 56.21.
Liam Meirow scored a second in the 1500 with a time of 4:04.36. Zac Petrie took a fourth in the 800 at 1:58.01

The Bristol Mile went off as planned on Saturday evening in Colorado Springs. Threatening weather earlier in the day conveniently departed so that the event could be run. Two consecutive years of cancellation would have been brutal.
The event probably requires a bit of introduction. The race goes precisely one mile down Cheyenne Boulevard in SW Colorado Springs. By down, we do mean down, as in roughly 100 feet of elevation drop from start to finish, or roughly a 2% downhill grade.
That much downhill gradient is clearly enough to get some people's legs turning over. Dey Dey (formerly Dey Tuach, a certified Colorado high school track and field star of about six years ago) won the event in 3:53.7. So, yes, that is sort of like someone running a sub-4-minute mile in Colorado.
Interesting high school times included Katie Rainsberger at 4:38.0 and Tabor Scholl at 4:45.4. Clearly, these two should be fans of downhill racing.

And, finally, this morning was the annual contesting of the Lyons River Run 5K. For a small town like Lyons, this can be a very competitive little summer 5K. Paul Roberts made a couple of former college studs named Andy Wacker and Kelly Christensen work hard for everything they got. Wacker took the win in 15:24, followed by Christensen at 15:42, then Roberts in 15:43. Following that, they gave the finish line workers a break and the next finishers didn't come in until after 17:20.
The event appears to have functioned as something of a mid-summer time trial for the Lyons girls team. You will find Miriam Roberts, Jenna Anderson, Sierra Tucker, and Faith Myers in the results. You'll also find a probable addition to the Estes Park cross country roster for this fall in the results, but you might have to use your knowledge of Colorado geography and place names to make the connection.
