Although the meet was held in Wyoming, a big part of the news to be made was made by Colorado high school graduates.
Topping the list was Mason Finley. Finley's shot put mark of 66-0.25 broke the Wyoming school record and the War Memorial Field House record. It also puts him at #1 in the nation in the event at this very early stage in the season. That throw does advance Finley to DI Indoor Nationals in Albuquerque in March.
Elizabeth's Scott Carter won the long jump at 6.79m (22-3.5) and the triple jump at 14.86m (48-9). This is Carter's first competition in Cowboy brown and gold after coming off an injury last season.
For the UNC men, Isaiah Grady took the 55 meter dash title in 6.28, Glenn Albright won the 400 in 53.94, and Trevor Evanson won the high jump at 2.12m (6-11.25). For the UNC women, Moriah Zachary won the 400 in 1:00.84, Stephanie Ryken won the pole vault at 3.50m (11-5.75), and Rachel Hinker the long jump at 5.93m (19-5.25). For those wondering about Ryken and the pole vault, no, she was not a pole vaulter at Grand Junction High School, but has done very nicely in the event at UNC.
Also, Alex Kizirian of Colorado won the men's weight throw at 20.47m (67-1.75). Kizirian's throw added more than three feet to the University of Colorado school record. All five of Kizirian's legal throws exceeded the existing school record.
