For your track and field pleasure--the Roosevelt/Mtn. View TC All-Comers

It would suggest something about the popularity of track and field in this state if we still had track meets going into August.

Well, the fact is track is popular in this state, and we do have a track meet coming on the 1st of August, courtesy of Roosevelt High School and the Mountain View Track Club.

It's not quite a full slate of events. Referencing the typical Colorado high school events, this one will be short the relays, the 300 hurdles, the 3200, and the discus. You're probably puzzling most over the omission of the discus, but that would owe to the fact that the discus sector shares real estate with the football practice field. If we sent Josie Natrasevschi down and armed her with a few discs, she could have the entire sector cleared to a comfortable distance in no time. Somehow, though, the folks at Roosevelt High School/Mountain View Track Club either didn't think of that or Natrasevschi commanded too steep of an appearance fee. So, there will be no discus.

Neither will there be online registration. You show up on Friday evening, August 1, with two dollar bills or eight quarters in your hand, and you can count yourself as registered. Show up with four rolls of pennies in hand, and you can probably count yourself as persona non grata.

At this point in time, I don't have a start time, but I'm guessing something in the vicinity of 6 PM, and I'm hoping someone will read this (or the e-mail I'm about to send) and give me an official starting time. I'll update the article when I have it. Late-breaking news: the start time of the meet will be 5:30 PM.

Age limits are apparently irrelevant, meaning we just might see Gwen Norton--the Loveland Lightning Bolt--at this meet. Possibly her father could show up as well and run something. A 400 showdown between Kevin Clark and Matt Norton would be well worth the price of admission. It would be worth far more than the price of admission to see either of them pole vaulting, but neither is expected to sign up for the pole vault, leaving that to the younger athletes at the meet.

In any case, this figures to be your last track and field action in the state until December, so point your GPS to Roosevelt High School in Johnstown, step to the plate with $2, or wonder what you missed. And bring your own water bottle--there are no drinking fountains readily accessible from the track.
