
For the better part of the race, it was Maya Browning running all by herself and the Red Sea behind her, but... Photos by Alan Versaw.
It was first whispered among the crowd, then uttered freely, "Fairview is going to put a perfect score up on the field."

And the varsity girls race very much looked that way. Maya Browning (photo, left) was putting an enormous gap on the field, and the places behind her wore the red singlets and black shorts of Fairview High School. It was all very methodical and thorough.
Not only did Fairview seem lined up for a perfect score, it seemed entirely possible that the Knights would add insult to injury and lay claim to the top seven places. For a little over two miles, that was the only script to read.
But, somewhere out on the southwest corner of the second loop around the course, Broomfield's Regan
VanDePol (photo, right) picked up another script, one carelessly discarded by the side of the trail.
And so the sniper attack...
