What follow are data. The idea here is actually quite simple, though the amount of data might seem to suggest otherwise. Read on.
Some have cited as a weakness of the Colorado rankings system for state qualification that someone can post a big mark in March, tank the rest of the season, and still end up at state on account of one early season mark. Whether or not you find that scenario undesirable, we can at least use data to determine how frequently that kind of situation occurs within the system.
I picked on discus here because it is an event known to have some fickle results. Highly technical events can be that way. If we are going to see the kind of situation mentioned above, it is most likely to occur in a technical event.
