Colorado 2A Classification Records

You can make a worthwhile case for Chris Carpenter as the 2A long jump record holder, but he's not officially on the books. Photo by Jeff McCoy.

The 2A record book is home to Colorado's oldest high school track and field record, but there really should be an asterisk on the record. The "2A" boys long jump record of 22-11.75 dates back to 1931 and belongs to Otto Staab of Hugo High School (a nice trifecta of Germanic names there). We don't know much more about Staab, except that he shows up in the University of Colorado football team photo for 1932 and the University of Colorado track team photo for 1933.

An asterisk (or two) would apply to the record inasmuch as no wind readings were in use for the long jump in 1931, nor were there rules about age of competitors in high school track and field back in 1931. So, it's entirely possible--though by no means a certainty--that Staab would have been of an age in 1931 that would be ineligible for high school participation today.

It would appear that Staab's long jump record was assigned to 2A when 2A was the classification that took in all of the smallest schools in Colorado. The former Hugo High School has now merged with the high school at Genoa to become Genoa-Hugo, and even at that is one of the smallest schools in Colorado with a recent enrollment count of 40 students. In that sense, it could be his jump would be better classified as a 1A record, but 1A was given a blank slate for records when that track and field classification came on board in 2011. So, 2A retains the distinction of the oldest surviving state track and field record until somebody parks one out to 23 feet or beyond.

We, of course, don't know about the sand level in the pit where Staab made his record jump in 1931, but much the same could be said of about half the long jumps in the state still today.

The top 2A long jump mark since Colorado Track XC began archiving results in 2008 belongs to Chris Carpenter of South Park High School at 22-6.75 (0.0). That mark was attained at the state meet in 2014 where we know the sand is very much up to level with the runway.

See more extended discussion about Staab's record in this forum thread.
