Longmont's Elizabeth Stover and Matt Butcher were tabbed as most valuable athletes at Saturday's Boulder County Championships meet, but the big surprises of the day were in how well the smaller schools fared.
Girls Recap
On the girls side Elizabeth Stover showed that she could very well be the best pole vaulter in the state by setting a new state record in the pole vault. Nevertheless, many in the crowd--including the meet announcer--had no idea it had happened fthrough much of the meet. It wasn’t until late in the day that it was announced and the crowd responded with loud applause. Stover had been very close to getting over thirteen feet the last three meets, a height that the her coach Warren Franz said that she was grateful to get. But the 2008 MVA had a busy day in other venues as well, winning the long jump (16 -11.5), pole vault (13-1), finishing second in the 100 hurdles, and anchoring the Trojans winning 4x100 relay (51.11). But, Stover was not the only person to contribute to the Lady Trojans winning the team title. Placing three people in the long jump gave the Longmont the cushion it needed going into the 4x400 meter relay. Maybe the biggest surprise of the day belonged to the Lyons Lions. The small 2A School tied Niwot for third, a feat that coach Mark Roberts was very proud of. The Lions were led by champions Rachel Hinker, (100m) and Melissa Roberts (3200), giving the Lions 20 solid points. The Lions got their third place finish largely on the strength of a third, second, and third in the 4 X 100, 4 X 200, and 4 X 400 relays. Adding to their total were the sixth-place finishes of Robyn Albertson in the 100m hurdles and the 300 hurdles. The Lions came away as the team to be reckoned with, showing that they can compete with the large schools. This team will certainly make some noise at the 2A state meet next month.
