Of the nine teams participating in this meet, Pine Creek, Liberty, and The Classical Academy put most or all of their varsity on the shelf. Other programs, including Discovery Canyon, Buena Vista, Manitou Springs, Woodland Park, Fountain Valley, and Vista Ridge put at least substantial portions of their varsity rosters on the course.
The boys race quickly developed into a three-person affair. At one mile, Steven Stoot (Fountain Valley), Joseph DeMoor (Buena Vista), and Shawn Dubbs (Woodland Park) were running shoulder-to-shoulder and had already put the better part of 100 meters on the rest of the field. By 1.5 miles, Dubbs had dropped off the back of the lead group, and DeMoor would soon leave Stoot behind as well. For the remainder of the race, the only question was how much room DeMoor could put on the field. By the end of 5K, it was a healthy 19 seconds, with DeMoor winning in 16:09 to Stoot's 16:28 under ideal running conditions. Woodland Park, however, would win the team battle with 43 points to 56 for second-place Classical Academy.
Buena Vista's Hannah Cooling threatened to make it a clean sweep for the Demons, going through the mile with a 20-meter lead and running at a pace that would finish under 20:00. That pace, however, would end up being more than she could sustain for a first race of the season. First, Emily LaValley (at left) of The Classical Academy, then Amanda McCann of Vista Ridge overhauled the Buena Vista leader. Emily LaValley would end up cruising to the win in 20:28, seven seconds ahead of McCann.
In the team score, TCA's 1-8-9-10-16 would be enough to slip by all the other teams. Vista Ridge finished second at 65 points, but claimed three of the top five places.
