Colorado High School Alums at USATF Indoor Nationals, Part 1

The USATF Indoor Championships are taking place this weekend in Albuquerque.

Not all track and field careers end with high school gradutation. In fact, some extend even beyond the college years.

Several such careers of interest to Colorado fans of track and field are on display this weekend in the Albuquerque Convention Center at the USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Here's a quick review of where Colorado's high school alumni ended up in Saturday's results (with another review for today's results coming either late this evening or early tomorrow):

  • Mel Herl (Eaton) finished sixth in the women's weight throw. Although Herl's mark of 66-7.75 was well off her season best, a mark matching her season best would not have moved her up in the event standings.
  • Eleanor Fulton (Highlands Ranch) advanced to finals of the women's 1000 with a fourth-place finish in prelims and a time of 2:43.69.
  • Toni Smith (Montbello) went 19-9 in the long jump to finish 7th.
  • Woody (Will) Kincaid (Columbine) and Tabor Stevens (Canon City) finished second and tenth, respectively, in the two mile. Kincaid posted a time of 8:38.66, while Stevens went 8:45.00.
