When The Classical Academy first fielded a track and field program, Elbert was a staple meet in our schedule. Until today, however, I hadn't been to an Elbert meet in a long time--probably as many as 10 years.
It didn't take me long, however, to recognize the familiar chill in the air. Nothing--at least not in March or April--is ever really very warm in Elbert.
With this year's edition of the Elbert Invitational being a Monday make-up of a meet originally scheduled for a Saturday, it was not terribly surprising to find a comparatively small crowd of teams in attendance. The only teams that reached beyond the borders of Elbert and El Paso Counties were Cripple Creek-Victor, Deer Trail, and Byers.
Otherwise, it was a decidedly local crowd. But, it was an easy meet to get to--25 miles and four stoplights. So, the decision to take in a morning of track and field was an easy one. Bad days spent at a track meet are few and far between, and this wasn't one of them.
