The 1,600 at the Coyote Warrior Invite was left to a furious sprint to the finish Saturday.
Week 2 of the outdoor season brought a few of Colorado's elite out of the shadows and into the spotlight. We've got 13 new state-leading marks on the boys side, and 14 on the girls. Additionally, several of Colorado's best have emerged onto the national rankings.
Back On Track: Brynn Siles returned to the track and ran a state-leading 10:56 at the Coyote Warrior Invite. Siles went undefeated during the cross country season but missed the state meet with an injury. Her 10:56 clearly shows she's fit and ready to roll through the outdoor season the way she did cross. Likewise, Claudia Burgess paced herself to a 5:11 (No. 2 in the state) victory at the same meet to win the 1,600 - she hasn't run near her 5:10 PR in nearly two years, but it appears she's got her sights set beyond that mark.
Jumping To New Lengths was Lily Margolis, who leapt to another PR this past weekend to stay on top of the Colorado leaderboard in the long jump. Additionally, her mark of 18-01.5 is currently No. 7 in the country. Kiana Jackson entered the state and national lists as well in the triple jump. Jackson's 37-7.5 is No. 1 in Colorado, and No. 9 in the country.
Luc Andrada has made an early statement in the quest to be the King of Colorado Sprints. Andrada ran 10.92 at the the Larry Pickering Centennial. So far he's the only runner under 11-seconds this season. Additionally, he beat Frank Nash in the process. Nash ran 11.17 to place second.
Keep An Eye On Cruz Culpepper - the sophomore ran the second fastest 800 in state at the Windsor Invite. Culpepper ran 1:57.71. At this rate, he's on pace to PR nearly every time he races, which makes him very, very dangerous. Also, he finished second (again) to James Lee, who ran 1:55.38 for the win. Lee's time is just a second off his PR. On the note of distance in Colorado, Landon Rast overtook Lee on top of the 1,600 rankings. Rast ran 4:21 at the LPS Spring Duals.
In The Hurdles Joel Nyatusah now owns the No. 1 mark in Colorado, and No. 7 time in the country in the 110 hurdles. Nyatusah ran an eye-opening 14.33 at the Aurora City Championships.
Adding to the meet, Kevin Traylor tallied a state-leading mark in the long jump - and the No. 5 jump in the country. Traylor went 23-0
But wait - there's more!
Jequan Hogan opened up his outdoor season at the Thunderridge Invite, and did not disappoint. Hogan dominated the triple jump with a nation-leading mark of 50-8.5. That's currently the No. 1 mark in the country by three-and-a-half inches.
Also entering the national rankings was Kain Medrano, who went 179-0 in the discus. The mark is No. 12 in the country.
