Lewis, Rex Win State Pentathlon Titles

Special to Colorado Track XC by Steve Rex

Kobi Rex, a junior from Lewis-Palmer HS, led the field of 26 pentathletes in the combined competition with events including 200m, discus, long jump, high jump, and concluding with the 1,500m race. He scored 2,944 points, winning by 43 over second-place Marcus Pierce of Arapahoe HS.

This was Rex’s second time at the Aurora Pentathlon held at Legacy Stadium at Cherokee Trails HS on May 20. He improved his placing from last year’s 9th place with increased practice in his throws and jumps. Kobi recently placed 2nd in the 4A Championships in the high jump with a 6-7 jump and 9th in the pole vault clearing 13-0. He is continuing on into the post season track & field events with the Great Southwest Track Championship and attempting to qualify for the USATF Youth World Game Trials in the decathlon and high jump.  When asked what was the difference from the high school pentathlon and traditional decathlons that he had competed in, he said, “I enjoyed the shorter format with only three throwing attempts and three long jump trials. The high jump format with only 6 attempts and being out of the competition with two consecutive misses makes you gamble for a high opening height to get max points. The decathlon usually takes six to eight hours on both days while we were here for three hours.”

Matt Randall, a junior from Brighton HS placed third with a score of 2,845 points and is competing in the decathlon at the Great Southwest Track Meet as well. Matt said, “I am excited to compete with Kobi again and travel down to Albuquerque to compete with the national record holder in the decathlon, Curtis Beach from Albuquerque Academy.”

Brittany Lewis, a sophomore at Overland HS, competed with a field of 20 pentahletes from all classes in events including the 200m, shot put, long jump, high jump, and ending with the 800m race.  She scored 3,212 points in her first multi-event competition. Last weekend, Lewis won the 5A long jump at the state meet with a leap of 18-0.5. She was followed in the pentathlon by Aurora Central junior Sabrina Jones, who was 8th last year, scoring 2,769 points and Kayla Mescher from Brighton HS with 2,730. Mescher had missed half the outdoor season with a back injury, but was excited to be able to compete prior to surgery scheduled for the next day.
