The final 1A standings put Caliche High School on top. The Buffaloes finished strong as a state runner-up in baseball. That, coupled with being a semifinalist in football and a state title in boys basketball was enough to claim first place over, in order, Otis, McClave, and Granada.

Atop the final 2A standings was a familiar name--Limon. But, it took a strong showing in spring sports to pull it off. The Badgers finished second in girls track, second in baseball, and fifth in boys track to overcome solid years from Wray, Rocky Ford, Holyoke, and Paonia. The only team state championship for Limon this school year came in Spirit-Poms, a bit of a departure from the usual order of things for Limon.

The Classical Academy claimed the 3A title by a scant point over Faith Christian. Both schools piled up serious points in spring sports, but it was a pair of state championships in track and field that pushed TCA over the top. Eaton, Kent Denver, Valley, and Holy Family each finished the year with very strong showings as well.

4A finished its topsy-turvy year with Mullen on top. The Mustangs eked out the title over Cheyenne Mountain, Wheat Ridge, Lewis-Palmer, Broomfield, and Rock Canyon. Both Mullen and Cheyenne Mountain took serious hits to the rule that only allows teams to accumulate points from two sports which are not contested in at least three classifications, but still managed to claim the top two slots. But for this rule, Cheyenne Mountain would have been the classification winner.

In 5A, it was another familiar name at the top--Cherry Creek High School. Although the Bruins also had several points given away from finishes in sports that are contested in only one or two classifications, they were still dominant over all other schools in the 5A classification. Overall, Cherry Creek claimed four team state championships on the year--boys cross country, boys tennis, girls  swimming, and girls tennis. Rounding out the top five in 5A were Regis Jesuit, Highlands Ranch, Arapahoe, and Mountain Vista.

Quick Rules Review: Teams are awarded 15 points for a team finishing first in state, 13 points for second, 11 for third, and so on down to 1 point for eighth. Ties split points. In sports where a tournament bracket is used, semifinalists each get 10 points and quarterfinalists each get four points. Teams may only accumulate points in two of the three spirit categories. Teams may only accumulate points in two sports that are contested in only one or two classifications (including boys and girls lacrosse, girls golf, boys and girls tennis, field hockey, gymnastics, ice hockey, boys and girls swimming, and boys and girls skiing). While this latter rule does not make for a perfectly level playing field level, it does help to even out certain advantages of geography and socio-economic differences between schools.
