Stellar Runs In Salida At High School Trail Championships

Steamboat's Maggi Congdon dances over the rocks and into the final mile.

While Gaylord and Szuch were battling it out up front, two-time state champion Maggi Congdon, lingered behind in the their shadows. Congdon proved to have the strength to the distance, as she ran within sight of the two for much of the race.

The recent 800 and 1,600 state champion finished third overall, and was just 17 seconds behind Szuch, in 41:59.

Steamboat showed their summer fitness by stacking their top three scoring runners into the top 10 overall. Isabelle Boniface and Sidney Barbier rounded out their scoring, finishing seventh and 10th.

Steamboat tallied 20 points to beat runner-up Pagosa Springs, aka the Piratez, by 19 points. Pagosa tallied 39 points, just ahead of Salida, aka Lettuce hem, who finished third with 44 points.

The boy's team race was much closer by comparison. It was so close, in fact, that one point separated victory from defeat - also known as placing second.

Taking the team title was Central High School, who scored 18 points. The Warriors won by the slimmest of margins, beating Fort Collins, aka The Thrashers, who scored 19 points. Blonde and Mighty, or better known as Salida, finished third with 37 points.

Central pumped their top three scoring runners into the top 11, going 3-4-11.

While The Thrashers may have finished second as a team, one Thrasher made no contest of the individual race.
