Niwot's Samrawit Dishon is the breakout performance of the weekend.
There were many stories that came out of this weekend, but the main story has to be Niwot's Samrawit Dishon.
Dishon made waves during the track season with a 5:11 PR in the 1,600, and a sixth-place finish at the state championships in the event, but a year ago she was a 20:23 5ker. (Technically, she still is).
To paint the picture even more clear, she opened her 2018 track season with a 5:36. And looking further back in time, she ran 5:43 as a freshman. She was Niwot's fourth runner at state last October, and 70th overall.
But this past weekend Dishon made the case that she may very well someone to keep an eye on this season.
Dishon finished third at the Vista Nation XC 2-Mile Invitational in 11:50 this past weekend. The significance of this result is not only in her time, which was 34 seconds faster than her 3,200 track PR, but in her place among the field.
The Niwot junior was seven seconds behind defending 5A state champion, Jenna Fitzsimmons - 17:20 PR, two seconds ahead Taylor Whitfield - 18:19 PR, four seconds ahead of Madison Reed - 18:19 PR, and 12 seconds ahead of Anna Shults - 17:19 PR.
If you haven't picked up what I'm putting down yet, basically she finished ahead of a stellar field, perhaps the best in Colorado. And the only two girls in front of her were 2017 state champions (Quinn McConnell and Fitzsimmons.)
Dishon's performance is deserving of this week's Leap Of The Week.
Of additional note... In the Week One Coaches Poll Niwot was sitting No. 3. But this was before Dishon's breakout performance. This makes Niwot all the more a threat.
