Jenna Fitzsimmons captured her second win of the season.
All According To Script
The script for the Division 1 girl's race was all but written by the time the race started Friday afternoon. Jenna Fitzsimmons and the US No. 1 Mountain Vista came in as favorites, and did not disappoint.
It was a race that finished eerily similar to Liberty Bell, with Fitzsimmons emptying out the tank just as she crossed the finish line. It was her second big win of the season, and she was followed by the two of the best freshmen in the country: Cherokee Trail's Cameron McConnell, and Cherry Creek's Riley Stewart.
"Those girls pushed me so hard today," Fitzsimmons shared. "We kept picking up the pace each mile."
Fitzsimmons and McConnell both dipped under 18 minutes, an unrivaled feat for this course. Fitzsimmons took the win in 17:55, which is an unofficial course record, just ahead of McConnell's 17:59. Stewart finished third in 18:13.
Another notable performance came from Cherokee Trail's Caitlin McConnell, the older sister of Cameron. Caitlin finished fourth in her best race of the season. Her performance inched Cherokee Trail closer to Mountain Vista in the team competition.
It was a race that saw three schools dominate the top 25. Mountain Vista, 5A No. 2 Cherokee Trail, and 4A No. 2 Battle Mountain.
Mountain Vista poured their top five into the top 13, four into the top 10, and seven within the top 17, while Cherokee Trail have their top five within the top. 18, and Battle Mountain had five in the top 24.
Vista Nation took the title with an impressive 35 points, while Cherokee Trail finished second with 52, and Battle Mountain finished third with 71.
