Colorado's best distance runners spent the past few months turning left and running races less than two miles, but when the season ends, and one of the largest, most celebrated 10ks in the world pops up on the calendar like a birthday, it's time to go up in distance...
As what's been tradition spanning the past 40 years, the streets of Boulder played host to over 50,000 runners for the Bolder Boulder 10k this past Monday, and while Colorado high school distance runners are just two weeks out of the 2019 state championships, some of the best toed the line in a distance likely beyond their training. Even so, there were some great performances!
David Cardenas, fresh off his 800 state title, was the first Colorado high schooler to enter Folsom Stadium. The recent Central (GJ) grad and future Adams State Grizzly, cracked the Top-10 of the citizens race, finishing 10th in 32:34.
Ares Reading also proved to find the 10k distance comfortable, as the recent Niwot grad was the second Colorado high schooler across the line, finishing 17th in 32:50.
Adding to the impressive results already, Central (GJ) went 1-3, with Tyman Smart finishing 24th in 33:14, and Ryan Johnson cracked the Top-30, finishing 27th in 33:22.
On the girl's side of the competition, Niwot (incoming) junior Joelle McDonald was the first Colorado high schooler across the line, finishing 28th in 38:30.
Behind her a wave of Colorado's best came in, with Lanie Szuch, Tiya Chamberlin, Isabella Prosceno , and Sierra Bower finishing within three seconds of each other. Szuch ran 38:58, Chamberlin ran 38:59, and Prosceno and Bower ran 39:01.
