Another 20 meters and Harrison Witt would've had it.
Or it looked that way at least.
The Mountain Vista - then - sophomore endured a rare off-day at the 2019 Colorado State Track & Field Championships, but he rallied hard at the 2019 Festival of Miles 800.
A stellar field lined up for the 800 on the tail end of May last year and put on a show for the crowd.
An opening quarter of 54+ seconds sealed the deal that this would be a blazing half-mile race, and the final lap lived up to the hype.
Around the top of the track and onwards into the backstretch Witt briefly sat in fourth, though he turned on the burners in the final 200 meters, kicking around the competition.
Into the final 100 Witt inched ever so slightly towards Martin Strong, who held a sizable lead.
The only question was if Witt would run out of real estate, and the question was an unfortunate "yes."
Regardless, Witt took the runner-up spot in a stellar 1:52.87, just behind Strong's 1:52.49.
The time was a massive personal best for the - then - Mountain Vista sophomore, and it was No. 4 in the class across the country
