The clouds are brooding outside my window and snow threatens to paint the landscape white. Again. April has had March feels as of late, though it's made me relieved - in one perspective - that the coming outdoor season runs from May - June, meaning that it's highly unlikely that we'll have any cancellations due to snow.
Meanwhile, we had three solid meets this past weekend that weren't impeded upon so much, if you don't count the wind...
Here are the highlights of the highlights.
We'll head out west first, where the Western Slope Elite Open in Grand Junction played host to a mostly-distance competition.
Tristian Spence was a big highlight of the meet - the Central (GJ) junior blitzed a 5:06 PR in 1,600 as the lone female competitor. The last time Colorado had an outdoor season - two years ago - she ran 5:18. Clearly, Spence has made some big gains...
Moving way up in distance Jordan Leblow endured 12-and-a-half laps on the track as the lone 5,000 competitor. Leblow ran 16:16.
In Johnstown at the Let's Get REAL #4 meet Kimora Northrup had a big day. The Niwot sophomore won the 100 in 12.67, the 200 in 25.51 (Taylor James was second in 25.62), and her third victory came in the 100 hurdles, where she ran 14.88.
Meanwhile, Maelynn Higgins was the runaway winner in the 800. The Broomfield junior won the event by nearly 10-seconds, running just off her PR in 2:17.56.
On the boy's side of the competition Mohamed Ibrahim proved that he's someone to keep a close eye on in coming months. The Wiggins junior won the discus in a Colorado No. 1 of 163-4. By comparison, Ibrahim's previous PR in the event was 140-0 from 2019.
In the 1,600 Bryce Reeburgh mirrored Higgins' with an 11-second victory of his own. Reeburgh ran 4:28.
