Coming from the south side of Colorado Springs, rising senior Shawn Kipchumba of Thomas Maclaren Charter School stands out as the top returning boy in all of Class 2A.
Fall XC 2024: Last fall, we saw a breakout season from Shawn Kipchumba, who made significant strides in his
racing and established himself as one of the top distance runners in Class 2A. He clocked a
personal best time of 16:31 for 5K at the Colorado 2A Region 3 meet, where he placed a strong 3rd
overall and stood out as the top junior in the entire field. Building on that result, Shawn delivered
an impressive performance at the state meet, finishing 5th overall, trailing only four
senior competitors in a competitive race.
Throughout the entire 2024 season, Kipchumba demonstrated consistency, never finishing outside the top 8 in any of his races. As we look ahead to the upcoming 2025 cross country season, all eyes are on Shawn. Entering his senior year, he is the top returner in 2A Region 3 and the entire 2A classification, making him the clear favorite to win individual titles at both races. Spring 2025: After his strong cross country season last fall, Shawn Kipchumba carried that momentum into a strong spring on the track. Qualifying for the 2025 Colorado 2A State Track & Field Championships, Shawn placed 15th in the 1600m and 11th in the 3200m. Solid performances that highlight his continued development and consistency across both distances. Throughout the spring, Kipchumba dropped personal bests, clocking 2:05.92 in the 800m, and 10:06.95 in the 3200m. He also holds a PR of 4:33.58 in the 1600m.
These times mark a clear step forward and speak
to the kind of range and fitness he is building as a young runner. What makes Shawn's
progression especially exciting is how well it will set him up for the fall. His fitness shows strength
and endurance, while his 800m speed adds valuable turnover that can be a major weapon in
cross country. With a full summer of training and another year of experience under his belt, his
case as the top runner in Colorado's Class 2A builds stronger.
Looking Ahead: The 2025 cross country season is just around the corner. Kipchumba enters with high goals and serious momentum. He will be aiming for an individual state title and will also look to lead Thomas MacLaren to the top of the podium. After a runner-up finish in 2024, the team has their sights set on the top spot this year. With Kipchumba leading the charge, Thomas MacLaren is set to make a strong run for the 2A boys state championship. Keep your eyes on Shawn Kipchumba and his squad this fall - there is a big season ahead. (Pictured to the right photo credit: Jen Jardeleza).
