Top Returners: Benjamin Adams

Representing Mountain Vista High School out of Highlands Ranch, Colorado is rising junior Benjamin Adams. He finished as the runner-up in the 5A cross country state championship last fall.

Fall XC 2024:  Last fall, Ben Adams put together a breakout sophomore season, consistently proving himself among the very best distance runners in the state. He landed on the podium in six of his eight races, highlighted by a runner-up finish at the 5A state cross country meet with a strong 5k time of 15:25.80, while also helping his team secure a 5th place finish overall. Adams carried that momentum into the Nike Cross Southwest Regional, where he capped off his season with a big personal best of 14:48.18 to place 13th against a deep field of regional talent.

Not only is he the top returning 5A boy this fall, but he was also the only sophomore to crack the top 25 at last year's highly competitive state meet. Entering the fall 2025 season, Adams stands out as the clear favorite to rise to the top of the 5A ranks and cement himself as one of Colorado's elite high school runners. Spring 2025 - #2 U.S. History: Coming into the spring track season, Adams carried a ton of momentum, and he wasted no time showing it. He collected six individual victories and set personal bests across events ranging from 800m to 3200m. What followed was a truly astonishing season for such a young runner. At the Arcadia Invitational, Adams ran 8:46.55 in the 3200m, making him the #2 fastest sophomore in U.S. history over the distance - a massive feat for any high schooler. Later in the season, he continued to elevate his performances, running 4:02.56 in the mile (4:01.19 for 1600m) at the Hoka Festival of Miles, where he not only claimed the overall win but also moved to #2 on the U.S. all-time sophomore list in that event as well.

His historic spring season also included a state title in the 3200m, a runner-up finish in the 1600m, and a 7th place finish in the 800m. Reflecting on his races at state, Adams said, "I was really happy to get as many points for the team as possible, make the races fast, and take control when I could." Insight: Notably, Adams was selected for The Nike Elite Program, powered by NSAF, a prestigious initiative built around five core elements designed to provide athletes with the best possible support system to achieve their goals and ultimately compete at the international level. Adams is one of just 43 athletes nationwide chosen to be part of this Nike supported program.

When it comes to training, Adams follows a traditional yet highly effective structure that includes long runs, tempo runs, hill repeats, recovery runs, and a strong sense of intentionality. This summer, he has been very consistent, averaging more than 55 miles per week while hitting all of those key workouts. With that foundation, Adams enters the fall looking strong, sharp, and eager to compete.

Looking Ahead: As the 2025 fall cross country season gets underway, all eyes are on the top returners. Coming off a historic spring track season, Benjamin Adams enters as the clear favorite to claim the 5A title. With highly competitive races ahead, we will be watching closely to see whether more records fall and new names are etched into the record books. Adams will also be a crucial factor in his team's pursuit of climbing the ranks and improving on their 5th place finish from last fall.
