D20 Championships Suspended

After athletes battled through the elements for a few events, it was a failed timing sensor that brought the meet to its knees. The Academy District 20 Championships were suspended until Tuesday. Photo by Alan Versaw.

The events that were completed were the boys and girls 4x800, girls 800 sprint medley, boys 110 hurdles, girls 100 hurdles, and the first rotation of field events. Times recorded were predictably well behind what any of the athletes were hoping for.

A combination of fog, persistent south winds (amazingly, though, not persistent enough to drive off the fog), and driving mist made for less-than-ideal conditions for a track and field meet. While the athletes put a good face on it and kept the meet rolling, a failing timing sensor made continuing an exercise in futility. The meet was suspended with the 100 meter dash in progress. The 100s will be restarted from the top when the meet resumes.

The meet will be completed, less Discovery Canyon and The Classical Academy, on Tuesday afternoon and evening at District 20 Stadium.

At this point, the only performances that are likely to have any impact on overall rankings are slightly reduced season-best times for The Classical Academy's 4x800 teams. The boys' team narrowly missed a prequalifying mark and the girls' team improved their prequalifying performance of two weeks ago by about a second.
