If the State Meet Were Held Today, Part II: 4A Boys & Girls

With a tip of the hat to Dr. Seuss...

The sun did not shine.

It was too wet to play.

So I sat in the house

All that cold, cold, wet day.

So, I wrote state track and field previews as the snow killed off my apricot blossoms. And this one is the last in the series.

As with the other classifications, there's a set of meet results or two missing that could tweak the rankings below a little. Once again, though, I'm not striving for perfection, just a picture of where things stand on the day of the big spring storm along the Front Range.

4A Girls (Scroll down for 4A Boys)

Am I the only one who didn't see this coming? I don't recall talking previously about Windsor being one of the contenders. But, here they are, and it's indisputable. The Wizards are on top of the pile one month out from the state meet. Windsor has speed to burn, and they're putting it to good use on their relay teams.

The teams in the chase to catch Windsor include perennial contenders Mullen and Thompson Valley, but also the likes of Mountain View, Glenwood Springs, and Fossil Ridge. Just as it is in cross country, the little Bermuda Triangle of Fort Collins, Loveland, and Greeley is home to some pretty destructive girls track and field programs.

Realistically, it appears nobody else has a wide enough distribution of talent to make a serious and sustained run at Windsor. Of the programs in the chase, Thompson Valley likely has the best distribution of potential points and is still a little short on meet participation. So, we may yet see more from the Eagles. That and the fact that they just might get a little chafed from seeing Windsor on a regular basis.

4A Boys

There really aren't any surprises among the top ten ranked teams in 4A boys. These are each solid, talent-laden programs. A couple weeks back, Sierra was on top of the pile, but the Stallions didn't quite have the meet at Mullen they should have and weather conditions wiped out last weekend's meet for them. So, Sierra may yet have more to show than what we see in the rankings.

Longmont, to nobody's surprise, has steadily climbed in the rankings. The fact that Aaron Praska has some support in the hurdles in the form of Josh Cogdill has a lot to do with that. Longmont's traditional strength in the field events is starting to show up nicely as well. Relays are, at least for the moment, a weaker link in the Trojans' chain.

Valor Christian has no such weakness in the relays. If they end up on top, it will be largely on account of the contribution of their relays.

At this point, Mullen's contribution is coming from an unusually small group of guys. Figure Mullen has another Mustang or two in the stable who can augment their point total (Actually, as I write that, I'm pondering the incongruity of keeping a mustang in the stable. Oh well.).

And while we're given nods where nods are due, keep an eye on Castle View. Their 37 points in the rankings shown below won't win a state title. But, I'm willing to venture that the Sabercats can post more than 37 points at the state meet. This team has the look of a team biding its time for the proper moment.

To my thinking, of all the races for a state title, 4A Boys remains the most intriguing.
