Mark January 21, 2012, on your calendars and plan to be in Lyons that morning. You just might see a rematch of Coach Callor and Coach Norton dueling in the desert. And there will be more matchups to enjoy as well. Photo by Margot Kelly.
If you're a high school runner, you might want to hone your next-to-the-course coaching repertoire between now and then. This will be your chance to even the score with your coaches just a little.
It all takes place at 10 AM. One race to decide it all. What is the fastest--at altitude, at 5K, in the dead of winter? Age and gender divisions will be set up. Minimally we are looking at 40 and under and over 40. Since Greg Weich is still 40, that gives us older guys just a tiny bit of a reprieve. Wait a minute, though, there is word of a team competition as well (at least one of the two team members must be the head coach--I think that means some of the older guys are onto the fact that a few teams make a practice of filling their assistant slots with young stallions).
The course will be the Lyons High School course, the same course used for the St. Vrain Invitational. The race will run no matter what the conditions (well, almost no matter what the conditions). After all, these same coaches make their teams run practice no matter what the conditions, right?
Coaches, please plan to find an old team singlet and wear it. We all want to know what school you represent while you're out suffering on the course.
The entry fee is a mere $5 (which will be redirected into prize money) and includes coffee and donuts. Eat enough donuts and you may see them again at some point during the race.
Come one, come all, join in the party!
