Great Southwest Indoor 2017: Colorado Gets Greedy with First Places

Top Moments of the Meet (1): Brock Helvey Dominates the Mile

In terms of pre-race reputation, Jerald Taylor likely carried the colors for the Colorado delegation, but Brock Helvey wasn't having anything of anyone else leading this race.

Maybe the decibel rating of the starter's pistol put Helvey in a surly mood. Or maybe Helvey just decided to go to the front and see what would come of it all. Either way, go to the front he did...

Through the first four (of eight) laps, Helvey continued to build his lead. With each passing lap, the hopes that he might be coming back to the field on account of an overly ambitious start washed farther out to sea.

The field was able to close ever-so-slightly on Helvey over the last couple of laps, but it was a case of too little and too late. At the finish line, Helvey still had almost four seconds of advantage on second place, crossing in 4:27.98.

And, yes, folks, that is an altitude time. It's about 4900 feet of elevation in the Albuquerque Convention Center. So, until and unless somebody betters Helvey's time at Simplot, that will stand as the top indoor 1600/mile of the Colorado indoor season.
