Shot Out Of A Cannon At The Denver North Viking Invitational

A million grains of sand exploded outwards like a cannonball had just landed.

And in some ways, it did.

It was Chrisly Kelly-Cannon landing in the sand.

And the mark was a 3A No. 1 of 46-6 - add that it was a personal best for the Jefferson Academy senior.

Clearly he was feeling it, because he also won the long jump in a season best, 3A No. 1 of 23-9 - that's his best jump of the season by just under two-feet.

Kelly-Cannon now tops the 3A rankings in four events - the 100, 200, the long jump, and the triple jump.

The Denver North Viking Invitational played host to quite a few stellar performances as athletes are eyeing top-18 marks so they can book their ticket to the Big Dance at JeffCo (AKA State!)

In the boy's 1,600 Ryan Olree made no contest of the event - he had the entire final straightaway to himself.

The Denver South senior soloed a 4:24.57 with the additional challenger of the wind. The time puts him just inside the Top-18 in 5A (as of Saturday morning.)

For the girls Vista Peak's Kendall McCoy dominated the 100 Hurdles, running just off her 14.44 personal best. She won the event in 14.47, which sits behind her 5A No. 2 mark.

Likewise, Prospect Ridge Academy's Avery Marr ran just off her 2:14.72 PR in the 800, winning the event in 2:14.95. She's currently sitting No. 2 in 3A.

And then there's Kiara Garcia.

Prior to Friday the Eaglecrest senior had a 33-5.5 triple jump personal best, which ranked her No. 27 in 5A. By Friday night she had leapt to a 5A No. 2, with a staggering 38-8 to win the event.

In other words, she went from being on the outside looking in at a state-qualifier, to looking at medaling at the State Championships.
