For all the great high school track and field action there was at the Air Force All-Comers meet, nothing much was lost in Boulder. And that's just a roundabout way of saying there were plenty of outstanding performances Saturday in Boulder.
For starters, there was Ally Watt running a 7.49 in the finals of the 60 meters. And, yes, she had to run that fast because, if she'd lost a step, Chyna Ries would have been by her. And, speaking of Chyna Ries, 20-1 is a pretty nice way to open your season in the long jump.
Carly Lester had a nice hurdle mark wiped off the board last week with a timing malfunction. So, what does she do this week? She comes back and posts a faster one. That's how you're supposed to respond to adversity. Lester's 8.86 has her sitting very nicely in the national rankings at the moment.
The 300 meter dash was a lap-and-a-half of pure excitement. Ally Watt clocked in at 39.82. Lester surfaced again here with a mark of 41.31. Those times give the pair the #1 and #2 times in the state for the indoor season.
At 600 meters, it was Rachel Hough by a hair over Mackenzie Howie. My hunch is that Howie picked up that event for a little overdistance work. Hough, on the other hand, figures to bookend that distance with 400s and 800s during the outdoor season.
Devyn Palm-Trujillo and Christa Boettiger posted a nice pair of 1500 marks at 5:20 and 5:21, respectively.
On the boys side of things, Kossi Tchenawou regained a few lost places in the national rankings by taking his 60m time down to 6.95. Looking at Nico Forcatto's time in the 300m (37.08) makes me think he may be having 400 meter kind of thoughts for this spring. Zac Petrie may have found himself a permanent home at 600m.
Michael Duran doesn't miss too many opportunities to compete, and he was moving well on Saturday, winning the 1500 in 4:19. Don't be too surprised if you see him cramming an extra 100 meters in under the same time later this year.
And, the name was new to me, but, when I looked back at his stats from last spring, maybe the name shouldn't have seemed so new. In any case, get used to the idea of the name of Joseph Saling as being one we drop with some regularity as we speak of the short hurdle events for the next few months.
That gives us a wrap on the highest of highlights, but be sure to do some looking in of your own on the meet results.
Before we forget, however, let's do the obligatory tally of sub-8-flat times for the girls 60 meter dash. There were five at the Air Force All-Comers meet and another six individuals getting it done in Boulder. Once again, we are shaping up for a simply outstanding girls sprint season. Seems it doesn't matter who graduates.
Look later this week for another "Colorado in the national rankings" article. In theory, that article could be done today, but there are likely some results from the weekend left to trickle in. But I must say that I'm looking forward to the moment where we start to see some of the throwers opening up.
