Rankings are a hazardous business. Everyone knows something you don't know. Everyone, whether poorly informed or well informed, has an opinion. Rankings are especially difficult in track and field where all the variables of four-event limits, relay composition, and peaking schedules come into play. People tend to take things personally where rankings omissions are concerned. And, frankly, lots of track coaches simply like to play the eight-lane version of chess. For some, it becomes almost a sport in itself to see how many uncloaked stratagems they can sneak into to the state meet.
Consequently, it's a lot more difficult to get a full crew together to do a set of track and field rankings than it is to get a full crew together to do a set of cross country rankings.
