Bayfield high school sent a grand total of one athlete to the Coronado Cougar Classic on Friday night, but that one athlete made a deep and lasting impression on the meet.
Coming into the meet, Edwards was riding a cresting wave of success. In short, she was enjoying an undefeated season. The undefeated part came to an end at about 1:05 PM when her 5:21 effort in the 1600 came up three places and ten seconds short of what Lauren Hamilton ran for the win in the elite 1600. Nevertheless, her time moved her to within three seconds of her PR in that event and into third on the 3A rankings list with only two weekends of racing left before state.
And nobody who has followed Edwards' career would be tempted to think of the 1600 as her best race. Her best race would come about seven hours later and, appropriately enough, under the lights.
